W.F. Morgan
In the early 1900s, Warren and Ethyl Morgan moved from Sutton, N.H. to Sunapee. They purchased and ran a soda fountain in the Harbor (Morgan's, now the Anchorage). Warren also had ice storage in Burkehaven to store the ice taken from the lake in the winter and sold to vacationers during the summer. They also purchased property in Burkehaven where Warren rented row boats and took summer visitors and all their trunks from the steam ship dock up to the Burkehaven Hotel. They built a store to provide supplies to the visitors and island folks and ran a rural post office in the summer. People who lived on the many islands south of Burkehaven bay depended on Morgan for taxi service, mail, groceries, ice, and miscellaneous assistance. Their only daughter, Dorothy, grew up in Sunapee working at Morgan's Store in Sunapee Harbor and, eventually, taking over the store and post office in Burkehaven.

Dorothy and Leon Gould
Dorothy Morgan grew up in Sunapee, working in the soda fountain and stores, and eventually marrying Leon Gould (who was working for Morgan). Leon ran the boat business while Dorothy ran the Burkehaven Store and Post Office. In the 1950s they purchased the property from Morgan — who retired to his property (Easter lilies and fruit trees) in Allendale, Florida. Leon became a master refinisher of wood boats and repairs to fiberglass (when he had to!) hulls.
With the increased mobility of populations with automobiles and personally owned boats, the character of the business changed through the 1980s. The Burkehaven Post Office eventually closed, the store closed, and boat rentals and service needs changed with the times. Leon Gould died in 1985. Immediately after that, Dorothy leased the dock spaces to the Island Association for 5 years, then to Paul Gallup Jr. - who refinished wood boats there - until 2004, when Lois and Rick resurrected the business.

Lois Gould Lois Gould grew up in sunapee spending her summers hanging around the Morgan boathouse and working in the Burkehaven Store for her mother. She left Sunapee in the 1960s to pursue an education and career, returning in the summers only to visit. After her dad died, she took on the management duties of the business for her mother, Dorothy. With the help of (half-brother) Phillip "Warren" Cox, the boathouse was rebuilt, docks were repaired and rebuilt, and the availability of dock spaces for summer visitors was secured. The original "cottage" was replaced with a new home and the old store and living quarters next to the road was taken down. (Interestingly, that was the third store that had been built on the same spot - now our lower parking lot.) Dr. Lois Gould, professor of education, retired from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, in 2003 and returned to her home in Sunapee. |

Rick Green The son of Lois Gould, Rick joined the business in 2004. Rick got his boat repair and sales experience working at Jim’s Marine and his fishing experience from years of cruising various bodies of water and catching trophy fish in the north east. Thanks to Rick and his partner Chris, the BoatWorks now offers service to our island customers and other lake visitors. Rick and Chris are available for engine repair, boat service, rescue service, specialized services (welding, propeller repair, etc.), winterization, boat wrapping, and storage.
Rick knows where the fishing spots are on Lake Sunapee. Call him for suggestions on how to catch that trophy Sunapee salmon or laker trout.
